In 10th grade, our American Dream teachers gave us an assignment to write an essay for the “This I Believe” program put on by NPR. This was an incredible challenge for me. I know what I believe in a moment, or if someone asks me why I’m a vegetarian or if I think the arts should be kept in schools, but summing myself up in an essay is such a huge challenge, and I never think that I can ever truly capture who I am in an essay.
The best tactic in describing who I am may very well be a performance, which is funny because when I’m performing, I’m often playing someone else…But when I perform, I feel most effective. I may not be able to write a novel, create a painting, or make a film, but give me a script and I can create a character. I feel like my real ability in creativity lies in acting and singing and dancing; I am the medium in which others can create their plays and choreography. But while that may be my most successful manner of creating, it does not particularly work for a project like this.
I tried to write a traditional essay for this section, but explaining myself completely in an essay did not feel effective. So instead I’ve compiled some other posts and pictures to highlight points of my belief system. Its like a little collage- each picture is something I believe in, and I hope that you can get a better understanding of me, and who I’ve become through this format.
